Scratches on Paper

Scratches of color on paper. It will probably be tossed in the trash later this week. No meaning, it seems in the strokes. But look closer!

This is a little hand using all their focus and might to do a task. To color a simple sheet with a picture on it. The picture is of the Bible story she just learned. The task seems small, but the results are huge. She is in one moment of coloring, focusing on the truth she learned. She is using much brain and body control to look at the picture, choose the color, and put the color to the paper. She is also expressing herself.

The story she heard had very little to do with her, most of our kids have never been fishing and certainly have never walked on water. But as she colors, she can put herself in the world, to make the boat her favorite color, and to spark her imagination of how she would make the scene look! She is relating personally to the story. She is engaging!

Adults, take notes during preaching, children color, glue, and create!

So, when you see this, you may see a simple task that may seem like a waste of time. I see a future Church leader taking notes and studying her Bible. Her orange scratches will turn to underlining in her Bible soon, journaling when she is older, and maybe sermon writing one day. This is how God works, in the chubby hands and orange crayons, in the small beginnings of childish moments there is greatness!

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Zechariah 4:10
